Just in Time for the Holidays
Do your hardwood floors look worn? Natural hardwood flooring is beautiful, but even with proper care those floors will see their fair share of wear and tear over the years. Before you have family and friends over for the holidays, why not have your hardwood floors repaired and refinished?
The great thing about hardwood is its versatility, and ability to be refinished. As long as hardwood floor refinishing is done by an expert, you can restore your floors to their original beauty and even make them photo-worthy for the holidays. What’s better is that you can keep them looking that way for years to come.
Why Refinish Hardwood Floors?
Refinishing can do a lot for your home’s floors, but just keep in mind it cannot repair damaged floor boards or warped boards. Some things you can repair with a professional refinish include:
- Scratches
- Faded finishes
- Lack of lustre
- Missing sealant
How Hardwood Floor Refinishing Is Done
There are several steps to refinishing floors, and while you might be tempted to tackle the job yourself, why not save yourself the time and hassles? You have Christmas shopping to worry about, holiday dinners to attend, presents to wrap and hide; refinishing floors requires time and attention.
Here are the steps that are taken to refinish your floors:
- Sanding – There are several stages of sanding, each designed to remove minor imperfections. The sanding must go along with the grain to preserve the wood and avoid damage.
- Edging – The perimeter of the hardwood floors is sanded or “edged” to keep the floors uniform from wall-to-wall.
- Vacuum – After each sanding, the floors must be thoroughly vacuumed to remove any dust and debris.
- Cutting In – The new stain is applied along the edges first and then the rest of the floor is stained in the same colour. The stain must be applied evenly and along the grain for a flowing, natural finish.
- Poly Coating – Once the stain has completely dried, the poly coating can be applied. This is a very critical step because this is what seals the floors and makes them watertight. The floors must be free of all debris to avoid trapping debris under the finish. Also, it must be applied with caution to avoid bubbling and missed spots on the floor.
